UK Resume (CV) Conventions

The British CV (the term used in the UK instead of resume) is a professional, content-rich document typically spanning two pages. Photos are not included on UK CVs, as equal opportunity legislation discourages any information that could lead to discrimination. British employers expect a well-written, clearly structured document that demonstrates relevant experience and achievements. The tone should be professional and confident without being arrogant. UK CVs focus heavily on accomplishments and transferable skills rather than simply listing job duties.

Format and Structure

A UK CV begins with your name and contact details (no full address needed, just city or region), followed by a personal statement of three to four sentences, work experience in reverse-chronological order, education, skills and interests. Each role should include the company name, job title, dates of employment and bullet-pointed achievements. Education should list qualifications from most recent to earliest, including A-levels and GCSEs for early-career candidates. Use a clean, professional font and consistent formatting throughout the document.

What to Include and What to Omit

A strong personal statement is essential and should be tailored to each application. Include specific, quantifiable achievements for each role rather than generic job descriptions. Technical skills and professional certifications relevant to the position should be clearly listed. Do not include your date of birth, marital status, nationality, photo or National Insurance number. The Equality Act 2010 means recruiters should not see this information. References are no longer expected on a UK CV; simply note that they are available upon request or omit this line entirely.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Note that the UK uses British English spelling (organise instead of organize, colour instead of color), and using American spelling is a noticeable error that suggests a lack of attention to detail. Avoid including personal information protected under the Equality Act. Do not exceed two pages unless you are in academia, where longer CVs are acceptable. Generic personal statements that could apply to any candidate are ineffective and will not capture recruiter attention. Avoid gaps in your employment history without explanation.

Professional memberships and chartered status carry significant weight in the UK, so list them prominently if you hold any relevant credentials.
